We love bowls as much as our customers do, and in January 2017 we were delighted to sponsor the World Indoor Bowls Championships for a fourth year running - this time as Just!

Just off to Potters

What better way to kick off 2017 than with the fantastic annual World Indoors Bowls Championships? From 13 to 29 January, bowls fans gathered at the Potters Leisure Resort in Norfolk for this fantastic event – and we were there too!

Did you know?

  • Henry VIII was a lawn bowler. However, he banned the game for those who were not wealthy because "Bowyes, Fletchers, Stringers and Arrowhead makers" were spending more time at recreational events such as bowls instead of practicing their trade! Henry requested that anybody who wished to keep a green pay a fee of 100 pounds.
  • The International Arena seats 1,100 spectators.
  • Bowls is one of the core sports included in the Commonwealth Games, and has been included since 1930. The only time it wasn’t was when it was held in 1966 in Jamaica and no bowling greens were available.
  • It takes 10 men two days to set-up the blue portable rink and 10 men five hours to uninstall!

Over the last few years we've spoken to hundreds of bowls fans and finding out what they love most about bowls. Responses have ranged from “because I am better at it than my husband” and “it keeps the doctor at bay” to “it keeps me active in retirement”. We love these insights into what makes Potters such a varied, fun and engaging environment.

Where can I follow the tournament?

The 2017 tournament ended on 29 January. For future reference, the BBC usually provide extensive TV coverage of the Championships from week three onwards, so you can watch the tournament as it reaches its exciting conclusion.

The World Bowls Tour website also has a full tournament schedule available, complete with day-by-day results. For those who want to know the ‘who, how and where’ for each day of the tournament, their YouTube channel is a great way to catch-up on the action too.
