Corporate Social Responsibility

Our purpose is to help people achieve a better later life. It’s the reason we exist as a business and it’s what we get up for in the morning. This commitment to achieving a better later life extends to our customers, our colleagues, and to the communities we operate within.

Charity partnerships

Giving something back is really important to us as a business, and also to our people and we are committed to supporting charities and our local communities.

Since 2023 we have been supporting our corporate charity partner Hourglass, the only UK-wide charity dedicated to calling time on the harm and abuse of older people.

We fundraise for Hourglass throughout the year, with our annual flagship charity event a definite highlight! Last year we held ‘Just Oarsome’ – a dragon boat competition in Wimbledon Park, where teams went head to head to take the win (and have a lot of fun in the process). We raised £42,000 for Hourglass through ‘Just Oarsome’ alone – a fantastic sum of money for an inspirational charity!

Sustainability

Our sustainability strategy is built on three pillars, aligned to the United Nations Sustainability Goals.

We are making a positive impact by influencing the market to invest responsibly. We invest billions of our customers’ savings following our responsible investment framework criteria. Our responsibility is to make informed, responsible choices and help others follow suit.

We are leaving a responsible footprint by aiming to reach Net Zero in our operations (our offices) scope 1 and 2 emissions as well as in business travel emissions by 2025. So far, we have reduced the carbon footprint of our operations by 90% since 2019. We also aim to be Net Zero overall by 2050, with a 50% reduction by 2030.

We have partnered with EcoTree to plant a tree for every one of our new customers over the next 5 years (250,000 trees).

Creating a fair world is directly influenced by the way we carry out our business and also the way we treat each other, namely colleagues, customers, suppliers, or members of society at large.

Mentoring

We recently launching a pilot mentorship programme for colleagues. As part of the Gender and Social Mobility strands of our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion strategy we will focus on female students from underprivileged backgrounds. The specific goal is to support them into STEM subjects (Sciences, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) to increase the number of females and the least socially mobile to successfully attain jobs and careers in STEM businesses such as ours.

Mili Popat, Define Benefit Asset Specialist said: ‘I understand how important it is to have someone to look up to when venturing into a world that you don’t know much about... Our mentoring scheme can give comfort to students that you don’t have to change yourself to fit in.…’
